That's another easy way to distinguish between a masthead rig and a fractional rig. On a fractional rig, the forestay extends from the boat's stem to a point on the mast that is below the masthead. On a masthead rig, the forestay extends from the stem to the masthead. Your Ranger 20 is a fractional rig.

The Catalina 22 is a masthead rig. See this hyperlink:http://sailboatdata.com/imagehelper.asp?file_id=8754

Compare it's forestay with the forestay on your Ranger 20, with a fractional rig. See this hyperlink: http://sailboatdata.com/imagehelper.asp?file_id=3353
