Absolutely read this book! If you have no experience sailing at all and want to take to the seas at least be knowledgeable about the pitfalls as Glenn Damato has found out.

Yes he sold everything (not unlike many here doing just that for the first time), got a sailboat (with no prior sailing experience), and went out to sea... the rest is history and a book!

OK how does one post from a Delorme to here?

Integrity and honesty mean more than money and fame.

Absolutely recommend this book, a very entertaining read and seems to make some good eye opening points!

Read up on Donald Crowhurst from the Golden Globe Race in 69 if you're planning this. He had a dream too, and ended up killing himself a few thousand miles from the finish line. Yes, it has been done before and is plausible, but you're talking about a voyage that has claimed the lives of many a seasoned sailor.

Dunno.. the OP was logged in last 4 days ago. Perhaps we've 'burst his bubble'... but he could at least thank us for it!

Maybe he learned about the amount of skin needed in the game, just stole a boat and he's gone.

I'm thinking of buying a 30 foot boat. Nothing fancy.

Is it possible for a total beginner to just buy a 30 foot boat with OK equipment for about $10k and begin sailing singlehanded?
You know you have no idea what you're doing. So, what part of this "crazy" notion do you want validation for?

So, either one of three things happen here: 1) this is a lark that will never come to fruition. 2) You are truly crazy, you do it and you make it (thus validating more crazies in the future). or 3) You do it and fail, in which case you become a news story about a foolhardy newbie who causes an $xxK rescue.

I'm going with ... you never do it.
