Need help rigging 470 dinghy in St Mary, MD

Hello,

Friends of mine in St Mary, MD bought a used 470 dinghy that is in great condition. They have limited sailing experience and need guidance on rigging and making sure all is well on the boat. They will be happy to pay a fee for the service. Local sailor student or club member would be ideal. Anyone interested or have recommendations? Pleas PM me if any. Thanks.

This is a rather challenging boat for a crew with limited sailing experience. This boat has a lot of sail area and requires the use of at least one trapeze to keep it from flipping over in winds above 10-15 mph. It does take a crew of 2 to sail it on all but the relatively calm days. I would have them start with a small jib and 2 reefs on the main.

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.

St. Mary's College of Maryland has a competitive sailing team. I'd drive down to the college and ask among the students and faculty if any of them could help you.

Re: Need help rigging 470 dinghy in St Mary, MD

It's a couple in their 50s and have sailed 420s quite a bit in their youth. They are just getting back at it but don't know or remember all the nuts and bolts of properly rigging a dinghy. I also suggested walking to St Mary's College sailing center but I think the kids are already out of school.

Thanks for the comments.

The students are out of school for the summer, but the waterfront operates through the summer as well, so that those students, staff and faculty who are on campus can still sign out boats, kayaks and paddleboards during the summer.

Have them head down to the waterfront and inquire.
