Question Nautical Superstitions

While planning my ill-fated trip from Providence to Ft. Myers, I was surprised to find that many people were unaware of many of the common sailing superstitions that I shared in planning the trip with my crew. Despite my planning and efforts to not annoy the gods, our destination was affected by Hurricane Irma, and our path was blocked by Jose.

They list of no-nos that I shared with my crew was
  • Never begin a voyage on a Friday (we planned to leave on Saturday)
  • Never mention "Poseidon" or "Neptune" while aboard, because doing so would be calling for him personally to come and mess up your day.
  • Bannas on a boat are bad luck (none were aboard)

Are there any others that I may have missed?

I think I read somewhere, many years ago, that albatrosses were a bad omen.

Re: Nautical Superstitions

As a strong athiest I ensure I yell McBeth in every theatre and every street corner in Scotland.

For no particular reason I think the majority of my passages have commenced on a Friday. I don't remember having sunk or died yet.

I often "call up Hughie". As an athiest I am unlikely to call up any "god", Christian nor pagan.

There's enough in my life to do without being constrained by utter nonsense 😂🤣😂

People can say they want freedom, but offer them the keys to what chains them, a map to where they want to go,
And they'll turn it down for the cell they know

Re: Nautical Superstitions

Regarding omens, there aren't too many albatrosses on the eastern coast of the US, so I don't worry too much about them. But dolphins playing in your bow wave are a good omen, and I have had them there several times.

Omens, however, are beyond the control of the captain or crew. What else is under our control?
