Opinions on a Mirage 5.5 (20')

I'm looking for my first boat. I am a novice sailer. Did most of my sailing as a scout and some catamaran sailing in the Caribbean. I want a trailer sailer that's not too expensive and will work on the Chesapeake Bay/James River area. There is a Mirage 5.5 on CL for a little while now (which is what had me worried) It's been stripped down. Needs paint and to be essentially put back together. The boat comes with everything to put it back together, a working 6hp Edinrude and a trailer. Guy wants $800 for the whole thing. I don't mind painting and putting it back together. But is it worth it? I appreciate anyone's input.

Re: Opinions on a Mirage 5.5 (20')

I have had my Mirage 5.5m for many years now. Not a bad boat, but it has it's drawbacks. The keel is iron, rusting is always a big issue, especially in salt water. It is not a very big keel, so going upwind you will be making a lot of leeway. It is not a very heavy keel either so stability can be an issue when heeling. Don't push it. The boat will pound like heck in heavy chop. Install better companionway boards because there is not much to stop the water in the cockpit from entering the cabin (very low sill). I have camped on mine for week or two on Pamlico Sound. Cramped but I don't mind. Great boat to explore shallow waters. Fast and responsive.
$800 is a great deal IMO.

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.

5.5 was my first boat. I pretty much ditto what krisscross said.
