Re: Stuffing box adjustment

I was taught that a stuffing box should be adjusted running until it drips about once every 10 or 15 seconds.

If you adjust it stopped until it doesn't drip you won't know if it's getting any lubrication when running. It could easily be too tight - especially when you adjusted it as much as you say you did.

I, myself, personally intend to continue being outspoken and opinionated, intolerant of all fanatics, fools and ignoramuses, deeply suspicious of all those who have "found the answer" and on my bad days, downright rude.

Re: Stuffing box adjustment

Thanks for the responses. I had not thought about the packing not rebounding when I loosen it in the spring. I'll keep a close eye on it when I start it up and see. If it starts getting warm, I'll just shut it down and plan on repacking it when I pull the boat. I have picked up a trailer that will fit the boat and plan on pulling it out in early spring for a hull cleaning and some new bottom paint. I guess I should plan of re-packing the stuffing box at the same time.
