Newport 27 Keel crack help

Hi everyone. I did a search but didn't find anything about this particular boat sooo... My wife and I purchased this beautiful 1985 Newport 27. We got it reasonably priced, however upon bringing her home we noticed this crack(see pics). This is one of the "permanent sealed keels" so we are really concerned. There is no indication of ever being bottomed anywhere else in keel. And the back of keel does not appear to have been pushed up or repaired. Can anyone tell me if I can just grind it down and re seal/glass it? Thanks in advance!

Re: Newport 27 Keel crack help

The keel on the Newport is supposed to be lead so should not have issues if exposed to a little water.

With similar or worse cracks on my boat, I wet sanded the paint off both side of the area to be repaired. Beveling the area for 12:1 recommended. I used fiberglass tape and Six10 Epoxy. The six10 has more flex but good strength. The repair has been holding up.

Ok so after some sanding and cleaning, what in looking at is the joint between keel and boat. There is about a half inch of sealant that over the last 33 years has hardened, shrank and allowed some water in. This water froze and propagated the split. It looks like I can just work this out and re-seal the keel joint. I'm thinking this might be wise to do all the way around the keel. Anyone else run into this before?
