Modification of Newport 30 Stern Rail

Has anyone modified their original stern rail on their Newport 30? I'm finding that getting on and off for folks that want to sail with me is difficult when docked either bow or stern first. Even the swim ladder requires you to slip under the rail our swing yourself over.

Re: Modification of Newport 30 Stern Rail

It's hard to see detail in your picture but the set up looks similar to our boat. I purchased a couple of 'Tee' connectors that slid over the tube. I cut the top bar out between the stanchions and plugged the holes with wood dowel. The stanchions are released from the deck fitting so that you can slide the Tee connectors up the stanchions, I secured ours about half way up. Before tightening the fittings install the piece of bar from the top. I then installed stainless eye bolts on the ends of the top rail. A piece of chain is secured to one end with a 'dog leash' clasp on the other end...this allows the chain to be released with one hand. I didn't like the look of chain, I used a piece of white plastic pretend chain. You still need to climb over the bar from the ladder but the rail is now only half the height, it has worked well for many years.

Re: Modification of Newport 30 Stern Rail

For 200 to 300 bucks a local stainless steel fabricator can modify your stern rail to put a proper gate but you might have to take the entire rail off and bring it to their shop. I just had half of my stern pulpit re-created on my IP35. It cost me $600.

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.

Re: Modification of Newport 30 Stern Rail

Bad design... you want to have a wire gate connecting the top rails (cut out the tubing between)... add end fittings w/ eyes to attached the gate. Weld a new horizontal tube halfway down connecting the two verticals.
Capt Len likes this.

pay attention... someone's life depends on it

Good design shoud consider several factors ,Like safety. If it breaks when you grab it to save your life at least you can admire pretty.

Don
You were not specific about whose photo you wanted but here is my modification.
Capt Len
If you are climbing into the boat you will not be grabbing the gate, it will be open. If you are in the cockpit and stagger backwards, you would have to go through the back stay before you hit the gate. I have never been concerned but as mentioned previously, one could replace the pretty plastic chain with a giant metal chain or cable.
