Got to ask, why not drop the anchor before getting into the shallows?

How many of us have an anchor ready for instant deployment???? It's a lesson that is often learned the hard way. The rest of us got lucky.

My anchor is always at the bow unless I am doing an offshore passage. My friends saved their boat by doing the same. Don't know why anybody would do anything else.

I have my primary and backup ready to deploy....I also have an older Atomic 4 and am seriously paranoid that it will take a day off without proper notification.

The last thing I want to do is end up in some tourist's sailing failures compilation on youtube.....of course, ending up on the rock jetty would be almost as bad.

Newbie-owner story:
Was motoring out of the marina that I had just splashed ye olde boat at last season through a very narrow and shallow "creek" with a rather swift current when the engine died on me. I gave it one chance to restart and then was at the bow with the anchor tossed in (no windlass) and cleated off so fast you'd have thought I was training for an olympic sport. I was probably way more panicked than I should have been though with only being threatened with a soft-mud grounding.

Newbie-owner confession:
I had never reopened the fuel shut-off. I was quite impressed with the fuel efficiency of my little 11hp 2cyl diesel though. I was able to idle/motor for a good 10 mins with no fuel going to the engine.

I keep my secondary anchor in a cockpit locker with the line all flaked out. The only time my engine quit underway was in the narrowest part of the winding entrance to our mooring basin. The motor restarted just long enough to scoot into the mooring basin and up to within 40' of the fuel dock... engine died again and I drifted into a big motor yacht. Noob confession: Didn't know the gas pick up was about 3" off the bottom of the tank.

Re: Sailboat washes ashore at Ventura Harbor - KEYT

primary always ready and on roller secured so it does not self deploy--secondary close to main mast and ready to assemble to deploy.
you have responsibility to your boat and self. oh yeah crew too h ah ah aha ha
question for you not ready with anchor--how long does it take you to ready your tackle for deployment??? how far away are those big rocks when your equipment fails??
your choice. beach or safe.
beach or anchored. rocks or anchored....
hhmmmmmm...... lemme think about that one..... hahahahahahaha
was taught to always have primary anchor ready to use within a few seconds, as it will be needed within less time than you have to assemble the mess and deploy it.
