What is this called?
by Josh Perry 05-16-2019

Greetings Sailors! I'm new to the scene. Bought a small day trailerable a few years back and am trying to get her up to standard and safe. As such, I'm redoing the mast wiring. Having trouble getting this piece out and was wondering if it had a name (the black bushing thingy around the coaxial cable). I will seek a replacement as this one is most likely going to be destroyed.

Any help would be appreciated!

-Josh

Re: What is this called?

Not to be picky but I don't think that's the correct bushing. There are others which have a groove which fit the walls of the mast...like the original.

The grommet originally installed is just for chafe protection. They can be found at any hardware or automotive store. But those don't have much UV resistance and get brittle quickly, like this one did.

Mainesail's aren't the same thing, but they will work, they will be water-tight, and they will last.

Re: What is this called?

The one in the link is $41. It's a specialised bit of kit to stop water going through the hole along with the wire.

As your boat is a trailer sailer the mast will be dropped each day. You don't need the waterproof deck gland just the cheap rubber grommet. 😁

Mind you, I wouldn't be replacing it at all. Brittle, maybe, but it's still protecting the cable from chafe.

Thank you all for the responses. I ended up going to West Marine. They had a large variety, but nothing that seemed suitable for the half inch hole/ coaxial cable combo. I will look other places for a grommet.

Good day to you all!

Not to be picky, Josh, but you got a number of posts advising auto stores.

They were probably advised for a reason.
