Material used in STOCK Spirit/NA 23 Centerboard

What is the STOCK centerboard in NA23/Spirit23 made of?

Are they all fiberglass? Fiberglass and plywood?

Thanks.

Hal

Re: Material used in Spirit/NA 23 Centerboard

Hey Hal, I did not see this thread, sorry about that.

When I first got my Spirit 23 there was only a stub of the board remaining! I believe it was originally foam filled fiberglass with weight on the bottom.
Here is a photo of the stub

In my first haul out post I showed the new board that we built.

It was made from two ĺ inch pieces of plywood epoxied together and glassed. It has worked out just fine. The only issue I have had was not being able to get the centerboard back up after some growth was on it.

Also, here is an older post where there is chatter about a centerboard rebuild

Ben... thanks for the reply. I wanted to know because I drilled a hole through the tip in the hopes of having a "redneck centerboard lift" but it didn't work out. I ended up putting some Splash Zone underwater epoxy in the hole to plug it up. Glad to hear that the original CBs were fiberglass and foam core.

But even with a foam core, wouldn't the board need some more weight added to it so that it would stay down? How did you get your plywood board to stay down?

Yes, you would need weight on the low side of the board for it to swing out and stay down if you filled it with foam. In the other thread they talked about weights for the boards.

It's hard to imagine that the stock center board didn't include some lead but if your board doesn't have any and you want to add some, McMaster Carr and other online sources sell appropriate lead disks. For example, a 4.5" diameter, 1/2" thick disk weighs 3.25 lbs.

I was able to pick up some lead scrap from a metal recycler so you could look into that.
