Need to install cockpit drain in Spirit 23

When it rains here in Oregon (that means OFTEN), water accumulates in the forward cockpit, but the stock cockpit drains are in the aft portion of the cockpit floor.

I want to install a single 1.5-2" cockpit drain in the aft portion of the floor.

Can this be done? Any tips or materials on how to do this would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

Hal

Move some junk out of the bow and stash it in the lazarett.

Hal, did you mean in the front of the cockpit? I agree with Capt Len, adjust weight. It will be a lot easier than putting another hole in your boat and have another hose to worry about failing.

Yeah, if your boat is in the water the stock drains should work fine.

Thanks for the replies.

Seems to me that I'd have to put about 200 lbs in the rear of the boat.

Even after a light rain, I have at least one inch of water standing in the forward end of the cockpit floor.

The rainy season is likely over for now. But what I might do is put an inch or so of water in the cockpit using the slip hose, then sit on the transom/stern and see if my 180 lbs is enough to get the water to flow aft.

Also, if I put more weight in the rear, wouldn't that lift up the bow and affect performance/tracking/steering and make the boat kind of "corky"?

What do you weigh? Maybe you can just sit in the aft end of your cockpit when it rains? Or you can just shift weight aft during rainy season. If you remove some weight from the bow to the stern you might need less than 200 lbs to affect the trim. When the rainy season ends or you go sailing you can redistribute the weight.

A sailing boat digs the head when sailing. It is always a good idea to keep most of the weight aft.

That is only partially correct. Depending on the conditions and angle of sail the boat will do different things. You adjust weight accordingly.

Re: Need to install cockpit drain in Spirit 23

OK... didn't have to wait long before it rained (typical Oregon).

I sat on the transom and my 185 lbs didn't make the water move aft at all.

I don't see any solution other than installing at least one forward cockpit drain.

The cockpit accumulates around 8-10 gallons of water before it can begin to drain in the aft drains.

Since I leave my boat in the slip year round, I can't see having to pump out 5-10 gallons out of the cockpit each time before going sailing.

Maybe it's time to sell....

How does your waterline look? Is the boat sitting flat in the water?
What weight do you have up front? Do you have a bunch of chain for an anchor pulling the bow down possibly?
