Re: New owner of a Parker Dawson 26 Ketch

Had not noticed Staggs post until today. Wx turned out to be a non issue as it split with half of it going all whirlly haily yuck yuck on Thunder Bay then the southern end heading down to the Keweenaw and washing out roads down there. It mostly just boomed and acted vicious around us but in the end did little more than rain a bit. If I had to ride out a violent storm, there would be fewer more suitable places than Isle Royale, lots of great hide outs up there.

Only other real weather issue we had was an upwelling on the north shore where persistent winds blew out all the surface water bringing up a lot of very cold water from deeper down. Nothing like driving up from a place with 100+ degree days and arriving in an area with lake surface temp of 38 degrees F. Lucky for us that only persisted for a few days and we were soon surrounded by comparatively warm 55 degree water.

Re: New owner of a Parker Dawson 26 Ketch

Few pictures of my keel removed from the boat.
1. The lift cable attachment is completely encapsulated with rust. There is no way I could remove it underwater in order to replace it. The pin was soaked for 2 days in Liquid Wrench before I could hammer it out.
2. The lift cable snapped in two during the lift!
3. GoHoist Tall Boy worked great. However, it is best done with 3 guys helping.

The top one is the pivot pin.
The bottom one is whatever is left from the lift line pin.

Looks like I need to get one of those things for sure.

How hard to handle was the keel when you got it free?

Not that hard. I lowered it with 5-1 pulley system. The boat seats high enough for the engine hoist to fit under.

Answering a few questions for Johney with pictures:

Firstly, I snapped pics of each page of the owners manual here for those of you who do not have the original owners manual: https://www.flickr.com/photos/558558...57700879192584

Mast hoist system:

How the gin pole rigs up.

This is what the attachment point on the boom looks like

The loops on the cabin top look like this.
