Tohatsu 6HP sailpro tilt issue

Newbie question..

Picked up a tohatsu 6HP sailpro model. Finally got around to using it, and wanted to tilt it up when i had it on the dinghy but could not get the damn thing to move for the life of me.

Ive never owned an outboard before and it looks straight forward but not sure what I'm doing wrong. The latch looks disengaged but she wont tilt. Do i need to disengage the trim mechanism to tilt the motor?

Do you have the transmission in forward?

Re: Tohatsu 6HP sailpro tilt issue

Shift lever needs to be in forward and if it is not latched then it is corrosion in the tilt shaft

Re: Tohatsu 6HP sailpro tilt issue

I have a Yamaha 4 stroke 8hp which has a "paddle" at the forward end which is used to release some lock or engage it to set the motor vertical or tilted with the prop out of the water or even tilted up a bit which IN the water. The damn think is so stiff it is almost impossible to move. Can't figure out why...

pay attention... someone's life depends on it

Yes the shift lever is in forward. I was to busy to go back today and try forcing it in forward again to make sure its fully engaged.

The motor is brand new, so I would hope there isn't any corrosion

Re: Tohatsu 6HP sailpro tilt issue

Hey brand new here. Just picked up a 2016 SoloSkiff with a 6hp Tohatsu. Starts fine, idles strong but as soon as I twist the throttle it dies. I've changed the oil, cleaned the tank and added new gas. Put new fuel filter on and sprayed the carb with SeaFoam. Still having the issue. Should I try a rebuild kit or just try to clean the jets?

Sounds to me like your high speed jet is clogged. I haven't taken this carb apart but if you can remove and clean the high speed jet that would be the first option. Past that you may have air getting sucked into your fuel line fittings. Make sure the seal is good when you connect the hose to the motor. Had that problem before.
