Peasron 36-2 rudder packing inspection?

I have an '86 Pearson 36-2. I seem to have salt water dripping into the bilge from above the prop shaft. I'm thinking it must be the rudder post in need of repacking. However, the box just below the quadrant that the rudder comes through, seems to be pretty well sealed. How do you inspect the rudder packing?
