Sailing the South Bay

Hello all!

I am a novice sailor (only one year, but a fun one at that!) that is planning on a daysail in SF Bay (most likely out of Redwood Creek.) Anyone have any tips or advice for sailing the South Bay at this time of year? I have heard that it can get somewhat... exciting to say the least.

Thank you!

Re: Sailing the South Bay

Redwood City is a great place to sail. Yes, it can be very windy in the afternoons, but as the year progresses that becomes less of a factor. Winter sailing in SF Bay has many light afternoon sails between storms. If the wind is too much, you can spend a lovely afternoon just sailing around the harbor channels. One very important factor is the tides. At low tide it is Very Shallow (did you notice the capital letters?). Especially going out into the bay, keep in the channel. You may be tempted to cut the corner a little - don't do it. Be careful sailing on a falling tide. If you do go aground, anchor and wait for the tide to come in. There are some nice sloughs that you can explore, and anchor overnight. Ask at the yacht club (Sequoia Yacht Club) for advice. There are a lot of places to sail in the South Bay. Cayote Point, San Leandro and more. Have a great visit.
