tartan 3500 cored hull question

the 3500 boats have cored hulls. Tartan says they are partially cored. my question is: are they cored to the waterline or is the hull cored below the waterline as well? thanks.

Re: tartan 3500 cored hull question

Don't know but what's the core, Balsa or foam??? If foam, it is not such a concern as any leaks won't rot foam core. Still not a good thing if glass breaks loose from the core but not nearly as bad as water intrusion in Balsa core.

Re: tartan 3500 cored hull question

Ib my experience, it has nothing to do with the water line. My Tartan 37 has parts of the hull below the waterline that are cored, and some that are not. I think it has more to do with strength requirements.

I certainly would not assume that something was solid fiberglass just because it was below the water line.

Re: tartan 3500 cored hull question

I would safely assume it is built just like my T-4100, in which case it is a balsa core that transitions to solid glass at any stress areas or at bulkheads and through-hull penetrations. Balsa has a superior bonding with the fiberglass/epoxy than does any foam coring so balsa represents a much stronger core structure. My 4100 has an exterior skin that is close to 1/2" thick, then the 1/2" of balsa and then about 5/16" interior laminate creating a hull that is 1-5/16" thick, much thicker than many other production boats. I feel very confident that I will not have any issues with the hull unless I hit a container, then all bets are off.
I had a Tartan 37 for 20 years, never had an issue with the core........

Cheers,
Tom
