Anchorage off SW coast of Florida?

Is anyone currently anchored off any place between Sarasota and Fort Myers? Is it allowed in many of those areas? I am currently on vacation in that area and it appears some of the river outlets have sailboats anchoring off. I am wondering if any of those are our forum members.

Especially interested in Punta Gorda - Port Charlotte area. My cousin lives in the area and has land on the Peace River. Thank you for any information you have!

PG has a couple of places to anchor. The first one is off Gilchrist Park and right now there's maybe 10 boats out there. You can dinghy in at the little yacht club. There's a couple of channel markers to lead you in. The second place is a mooring field but requires going under a 45' bridge. There's a place to land your dinghy at Laishley Marina. Both put you right off the downtown area.
