12v & 24v bus advice needed

My question is for a 24v starting, charging system, instruments and main cabin
fluorescent lights and two 12v systems for other fittings (bunk
lights,toilet light, bilge and
water pumps, radios and navigation lights) and an existing
arrangement of 4 12v lead acid batteries (comprising of 2 banks of 2
batteries in series) how is the best way to connect the 24v lighting and the
12v busses.

As the moment either or both banks can be selected by a heavy duty main
battery switch for starting the single diesel engine and charging circuit
from 28vDC/35A alternator back via same switch to charge whatever bank (or
both) is selected.

Firstly I don''t know whether to split the 24v cabin lights so some are off
each bank or to power all of them off whatever bank is selected for
starting.

Secondly whether to connect each of the two 12v busses, (I was thinking of
making one 12v bus (priority) for bilge pump and radio, and the other for
the remaining items), to a 12v
battery in each bank or to connect each 12v bus to a 12v battery in the same
bank.

Would either of these options have an adverse effect on the charging, in
that in any bank (or both) being charged one battery is working more than
the other.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

12 volt

Think about it a while then stick to one system.
12 volt stuff is available all over, don't know about 24v but I have not seen much around. In a pinch you can find a lot of 12v in automotive parts stores.
