Hi. I am in the process of installing a bimini and would like your opinion on the screw length. I own a 1981 O'day 22 and the instructions do not specify the screw length for the deckmounts and padeyes. It does specify the screw diameter. For the deck mounts a 1/4" or M6 screw is specified and for the two padeyes that attach the two straps, a 5/32" or M4 screw is suggested. What length would you think? I checked another manufacturer, Carver, and it specs a 1" long screw. After inserting the screw in the deck mount, naturally there is less screw protruding. The padeye allows more screw to protrude since it has a thinner base. I am concerned with popping through either the cabin top or simply punching through the combing.

I'm a canvas pro, and happen to own an Oday 22. I generally use 1" long screws, unless I can actually through bolt.

The right way is to pot the screws into an epoxy plug. The standard way is to drill the hole, countersink, and use some caulk.
