Hi guys,

Three things I wanted to pick your brains about, where my 1986 yanmar 2gmf with about 1000hrs on the rebuild is concerned (had the rangeer 28 sailboat with the engine about 4 months now).

1) The engine seems to vibrate quite a bit when started and in neutral. When i increase the rpms from the 700 it does when in neutral to about 1000 - the vibrations stop. when the engine is warmed up, it no longer vibrates very much at all (even in neutral, where the rpms then go up to about 900).

2) Some barely visible, whitish smoke/vapor rises for 30 seconds or so after the engine is shut off. Carbon monoxide detector (albeit a cheap one) does not react.

3) After every trip out when the engine has run for any length of time, there will be a bit of water pooled below the engine. About a cup or three worth, depending on how long the engine has run. The water seems to have a bit of antifreeze in it, though the antifreeze levels are going down very slowly nevertheless over the months.

What are your thoughts?

As per #1 Did you rebuild/check the injectors during rebuild?

As per #2 and if this 'smoke' is inside the boat, then probably a leak.

As per #3 ..... Have you 're-torqued' all the engine bolting (covers, head, etc. etc.) and hose clamps since the 're-build'? Usually done 150hrs and then again 500 hrs. after rebuild ... and then again 'yearly' thereafter by maintenance fanatics.

;-)

Thanks for the info guys! The engine was professionally rebuilt well-before I bought the boat 4 months ago. But I'll try and find out whether the injectors and fresh water pump were also rebuilt, as well as about whatever bolt re-torquings were performed.

The "smoke" issue seems to happen only when the engine is shut off. It's barely perceptible. I only noticed it yesterday because I was changing the oil/oil-filter and running the engine with the cover off.
