Hi, Im new to sailnet. I could use some advice on a recent purchase i made. I bought a 70's lightning 19. The hull is in good shape, but its not self bailing. Ok, so bailing doesnt bother me if some water gets in, but im worried about what happens if I capsize it. Will she sink? Im thinking of putting some foam or something in the hull. Any advice or suggestions?

Thanks,

Jeff

Welcome aboard. i'm certain someone here will be able to answer your question, however they may not see the question since you asked it in your first post and put it in the introduction area.

I owned a Lightning for a few seasons - great boat.
If it gets swamped it CAN sink as the center board can weigh as much as 500 #s. Flotation can be added around the perimeter of the boat (gunwales?) in the form of empty plastic gallon containers or foam.
Your best bet is to learn not to capsize it and carry, or better yet, wear PFDs while sailing it.
