I am wondering how many boats have a good magnetic compass below deck. I am going to install one on my little boat. I have one that isn't being used and it seem like it would be helpful to have a compass in the cabin.

Down East,
I installed one on the shelf next to the nav table. Obviously one of the issues is to keep it away from any metal objects.
I lined it up so that it reads the same as the cockpit compass.
very handy.
I also installed a small one over the main sleeping area.

It makes good sense to me. If for no other reason than to know which way you are pointing, at anchor, after dark. My thoughts were that it would be nice to have a compass to check when I visited the head. I like your idea of having one where you can see it from your berth!

The previous owner of my boat was given a really nice expensive Ritchie compass for a gift so he mounted that at the helm and put the boat's original compass down below so you can see it from pretty much any where in the main cabin, including the Nav station. It is wired into the boat so you can turn on the compasses back light.

You can see it just next to the sink in this picture:
