Hello,
We are relatively new to sailing and absolutely new to cruising besides weekend day cruises with J22 at the Boston harbor.
We recently purchased an ODay 28 with an Atomic 2 engine as our first and entry sailboat. Part of the "package" is a multi day cruise from upstate New York (Hudson) to Quincy Massachusetts.
We prepared in advanced for the actual trip, assuming not to sail more than 3-4 hours a day, harbor the boat in a. Marina every night, just take it slow and learn as much as we can by doing.
Now, the third day at the pickup location, we are facing engine problems. The previous owner put a temperature gage into the oil pressure plug on the engine block with is now leaking. For 2 days, semi professional people trying to fix the problems including a dysfunctional temp gage. There has been some oil at the engine bilge and on the block.
While the boat was advertised as recently refurbished engine, we are now questioning the conditions. We were prepared to face logistical and wheatear related issues but are now at the point where we rethink the entire ordeal.
The biggest question for us is rather or not the engine will hold. It's a 2 stroke diesel and we expect to motorized a lot since we are going to New York format least 2'days while only moving 5 knots. As the skipper, I'm technically inclined but have a tuff time judging cover rather or not the engine will hold. The overall condition of the boat considering the age is good but it has been an land for 6 years and only back in the water for 1 year.
Any advice is really much appreciated. We are Germans and you can be very upfront.
Thank you,
Joerg
