Advice requested on responding to DSC "All Stations" message

I know basically how DSC works and have read information about using it from the USCG website and from my radio’s manual. I thought I was on top of it until recently.

Within the last couple of weeks our radio has received two “All Station” DSC calls. They were not distress calls but had the tag “safety”. One has an MMSI number containing asterisks and a message saying ECC Error. The other had a valid looking MMSI and said Safety, Telephony Ch 16. I couldn’t see any other information.

We were in a pretty busy area with a variety of boats around (sail, motor, working boats, etc).

I didn’t know what to do and ended up fishing around on the radio for a while trying to get more info about the call, then giving up.

What would you do if you received something like this?

It should transmit the mmsi # and the GPS postioon of the vessel in distress. Then you would check your position to see if you are in the vicinity and able to render aid. It could be as simple as standing by until other help arrives.
Or, it could be more serious like people in the water, etc.

Thanks for the response. These were not distress calls.

Coincidentally, there was a DSC distress call this afternoon. Thankfully it was made in error and the issuing vessel confirmed that everyone was OK.

Oh missed that. A " Safety" Call, To my understanding is like a Pan Pan. The instruction, was to turn to Ch. 16.
Whoever generated it would have some sort of Safety message. i.e. maybe an obstruction in the waterway etc. Sounds like it was also an accidental triggering, since you couldn't find any additional broadcast.
