The best example of a boat with this description is the "Hawk" owned by Beth Leonard & Evans Starzinger. "Google" them and you'll see much of their boat's description and construction history. 'take care and joy, Aythya crew

The owner has fallen on hard times, retired and broke, he's looking for a new owner and has dropped his price (it was unrealistic and may still be) $50k IIRC. She needs a lot of TLC, but look at those lines...seems a real shame to let her rot on the hard.
If I had 100k and another 100k to refit, I'd buy her myself. Love to see her saved, otherwise, I have no interest or connection to the boat.

Most well-found boats operating in the extreme latitudes are steel or aluminum. Glass doesn't cut it in ice. These come up for sale occasionally and all will have enclosed pilot houses. They will also have other amenities such as insulation and decent cabin heat, large fuel tanks, reliable & tough equipment.

Look for a Van DeStadt design. He makes a lot of metal boat designs, and most are very capable bluewater boats.

my favorites
imho, steve and linda dashew have, and do, design some of the finest offshore boats and yachts built in aluminum in the world... deerfoot, sundeer, beowulf ect. nearly all incorporate some form of pilot house. most if not all carry hefty price tags but don't all nice homes? these designs do hold their value so it is somewhat of an investment I guess.

Nice boat FASTER. I like the extreme low draft feature. I've seen this on several aluminum boats up to about 40 feet. Makes a bottom job easy if you can find a nice tide flat.

Yes, she's beautifully finished, isn't she? (with a price to match...
)But I think that 50 feet and up is where the 'pilothouse' concept and nice lines are not mutually exclusive...

Seal is an interesting boat. Take a look at the picture showing the incredible amount of interior framing in the boat. Now go to the Yahoo Group Origami boats and take a look in the pictures section. Brent Swain the designer of these boats can be hired to come out and help you fold up a boat. In about 1 MONTH you can have a complete Hull, Deck, and Cabin ready for fitting out! I actually sailed on one of his steel 36 footers. I was absolutely amazed how this boat tracked upwind like it was running on rails.

your welcome, and i hope you don't mind the drool i left behind. I wonder after watching these videos and looking at the Dashews designs just what all the other designers are up to. Racing RULES aside how can you do better? Can someone point out the downsides to these designs, because I seem to be missing them? Seriously let's hear some negatives....
