...what prevents the whole thing from rolling around the padeye and laying on deck??

Faster, seems the tight rope and rubber hose maintain it up by attrition. I have some blocks on deck, I didn't find a spring replacement unity, not for cost savings. Seems interesting, I'll give it a try ....

Springs aren't that expensive ...

I had "flop-around" genoa-sheet blocks on the coamings of my old MacGregor 19 - just regular "becket" blocks on strap-eyes. I found the same springs that come under the Harken "stand-up" blocks were about $1.50 at West Marine ... took a little finessing to reinstall the becket's clevis pin through the spring coils, but the blocks stood up proud from then till I sold the boat.

I'm always quick to accept the simple cheap alternatives! These tennis balls have been holding up my sheet blocks for a number of years. It's time for me to replace them.
