Anchor Chain Cleaning

There was an anchor chain cleaning device invented by Michael H Golden
of Bellingham Washington in the 1990's. It was a simple device that
encorporated a plastic sleeve filled with plastic bristle brushes that
was notched and slipped over the anchor chain. There was a lead weight
to keep it submerged on the chain and a small nylon line was attached to

the top of it. As the anchor chain is retrieved the brushes scrub the
chain under water and remove the mud and sand. I had one of these and
unfortunately it became a member of Davey Jones locker. Does anyone
know of where I could procure one of these? Davis sold them years back
but they are now discontinued.

Why don't you make one using schedule 80 PVC pipe. Take a 4" diameter piece about a foot long... drill two holes in it, one at each end for a shackle, cut a slot in it and add three brushes to the interior. Add a weight to one shackle, a line to the other...

Probably cost you all of $25 to make, including the shackles and line.

Davis Instruments manufactured and sold a similar device for awhile. It worked reasonably well but didn't sell all that well and was discontinued. You can make a fairly good facsimilie by arranging two scrub brushs with short stiff bristles fact-to-face, connected on one side by a "piano hinge" and on the other with a cam-lock. This can be locked over the chain forward of the bow roller and weighed down with a 2# dive weight with a line to the pulpit to keep it near the surface. It works, but not as well as a wash-down.
