Experience counts when it comes to autopilot installs. There may be glass work, welding/fabrication, and other facilitating steps that have to be taken depending on which drive unit u use. Always remember that the drive mount receives all of the load from the helm. But, if you feel comfortable doing it, go for it.
if you are installing a linear drive 6000
it''s usually a simple job with a little glass or metal work.
the benefit to installing it yourself is that you know how it all works , where the course computer, fluxgate compass and rudder reference transducer are and how they work.
if you are going offshore there is nothing like knowing your boat, plus i believe a handy owner can do a better job than most yards.
