I have done a new Blog entry where I write chapter one of the history of the Baba's, This goes back to include the Hans Christian 36 and 34, Tayana 37 and even some Valiant history.

I try to write these entries in a way that will give you information that you can;pt get from anyone else. I don;lt always get history correct but when I have a memory gap I make something up that sounds about right and makes me look good.

I do not think my 4 kids would fit on the TY37. I'm sure your consulting fee could help figure out which boat would be the solution for that.

But do you also cover convincing my wife that we should sell the house (which we just bought and haven't moved into yet) and go live on a boat? We will also need to get all our friends and cousins to move to the coast. It's only like 45 minutes away...

Bob - here's a question for you. I've always been curious as to the type of people that actually obtained one of these amazing bluewater boats. After all, even in the 70s/80s there were production builders of mass market boats like Catalina, Hunter, Irwin, Morgan...etc. Then there were the Valiants, Babas, Pacific Seacrafts too.

So, in terms of relative affordability...what did a boat like a Baba 40 run for in the days it was first released? I recently inquired about a Norstar 40 and the sailaway price was near $500k. Half-way to a millionaire to afford a good bluewater Perry design brand new!!!! Was it that way in the 70s/80s? Or was it more in reach of the everyman?

Done little bit of sailing back in old country Croatia, now I am enjoying sailing when I can here on and around Vancouver Island. Some places look similar same are different, much greener around here.

In the mid 70's the buyers of these boats could be a couple of school teachers. Financing was easy and you did not have to be wealthy to buy a cruising boat. I don't recall prices except one. When the Valiant 40 was introduced as I recall the base price was $63,500 but to really sail it away was around $74,000. I think I paid $63,000 for my Esprit 37.

My buddy Bernie got one of the last Valiant 42/40's built and I think he had almost $500,000 into it.

Why did I not get involved building the boat and selling them? I had many chances to do this but I never wanted to be a boat salesman.

He had that boat at the Annapolis show a few years ago. IIRC, I was told that it was much more than $500K.
