We are currently at Spicer's Marina in Noank, CT and they had an auction this morning to get rid of abandoned boats. A Pearson 26 sold for $500 and a Dufour 30 went for $100!!. These boats were tired but certainly did not look beyond the possiblity - especially when you start out with purchase prices like these. I think there are a very large number of these boats out there and there will be some serious bargains to be had and not a few dumpsters to be filled when these relatively inexpensive boats are cut up when no buyer can be found.

These boats are certainly cheap. whether thay are anywhere close to a bargain is a whole different question...most likely, far from it.

Still, at that price you could put on used sails and bolt on an outboard and goof arou for a few summers in light air. There's quite a gap between "tired" and "unsafe to take into a chop". I've seen quite a few boats of a certain age where "bringing them up to spec" involved ripping out all the electrics excepting the navigation lights, and using a new handheld VHF and a GPS. If you pee in a bucket and drink from a cooler and nap in a sleeping bag, you can have a very basic boat that is as safe as any, but features minimal amenities. A cruiser used as a daysailer can be a lot of fun "as is".

I traded a engine for my 1975 Chrysler C-22 and have less then $500 in it.

I have been sailing it as much as possible and Its very safe , looks good and has been a joy for the family. I'm sure theres a lot of great deals on forgotten boats.. I'm keeping an eye on a few at the local marina's.

For those interested I recently saw 2 sailboats at Brewers pilots point in Westbrook CT that had free signs on them.... They looked to be in the 22-25 foot range not sure of make.... saw them from a distance.
