I just got a pair of second hand Barlow 24 winches. I cannot find an online resource for an owners manual (if you have a link or a hard copy you can scan me I would be forever grateful.) My question of the hour: What is the maximum sheet size for this winch? What is the prefered size for this winch? It will be installed on an Ericson 32. Thanks!

The service manual shows that you can adjust the spacers to work with different sizes of line:

Typically a winch that size would be optimized for 3/8" or maybe 7/16" sheets. You can probably go as small as 5/16", but it will slip more easily.

Thanks for the info. I was actually wanting to go with 1/2 as I like the larger diameter because it is easier on your hands. I guess I will try 7/16.

It looks like I made a common mistake thinking that a Barlow #24 had a 24:1 power ratio. They have a 40:1 power ratio and are similar in size to a Lewmar 40ST. A 1/2" line might work pretty well.

Since you already have the winches you should be able to try and see.
