Has anyone used Barnacle Zapper to keep the bottom of your boat clean of barnacles and algae? Sounds too good to be true - no more haul-outs for bottom painting.

How it works (according to the manufacture):

The concept of ultrasonic technology for use in cleaning has been around for decades. Everything from jewelry to medical equipment has enjoyed the benefits of this innovative process. Due to recent advancements in electronics this technology is now applicable to the process of maintaining a clean hull. The Barnacle Zapper works by emitting varied and pulsed ultrasonic frequencies from a digital control unit through a pair of transducers attached to the inside of the hull. The hull then acts like a tuning fork and transmits the sound waves through the water along the surface of the entire hull. The waves created disrupt the cell structures of the bio film and other micro-organisms causing them to die thus depriving algae and barnacles of their food source and leaving your hull free of any growth.

Of course these bio-killer ultrasonic waves generated out in the open (unlike in a box like a microwave) have no effect on people. They've tested this on at least three or four? Do whales use it as a homing device, or does it disrupt their echolocation systems? Don't know much about this thing. Can we hear more from those who do (other than from the manufacturer)?

Every few years someone recycles this technology and tries to get as many people to fall for the con as they can, before disappearing into the fog.
If it worked, it would be standard equipment on every boat (or ship, for that matter) sold and would have been since the 60's, when I first heard about it.

Sharing few tips if you are using the old traditional method

• Move out the boat away from the waters

• Have a proper outfit, protection to eyes and hands

• Use a scrub brush to clear the barnacles (you need to put effort to the sticked ones)

• Remove the chemicals

• Use a small scrub brush, or a parts washing brush, to get into the nooks and cranies around the transducers, trim tab hinges etc

• wash the entire hull with proper chemicals
