Anybody have any praise or condemnation about pipe thread sealant brands? Specifically Im thinking of seacock ballvalve to adapter flange or barbed adapter threads. Tapered pipe thread to tapered pipe thread.
Are there some specifically for seawater? Or does one use something like 4200 or 291 instead like I anticipate using on the thru hull threads?
Ive got some Hercules "BLOCK" but all makers seems to say their stuff is a miracle.
Teflon tape seems inadequate.

I used..

many years ago I used to be a rep for Hercules Chemical among other lines. My favorite dope is Real-Tuff but some guys liked Megaloc too. Rectorseal is also popular but it is a petro based dope as opposed to Teflon and as such should not be sued on plastic threads.

One trick many pipe fitters use and employ is to wrap the fitting with Teflon tape then apply the pipe dope. The quality of thread cuts is fairly poor these days so the combo of tape and dope works well. If you want to use one or the other definitely use dope over tape..

The Loctite brand of dope seems to work well in the cold in that it can still be spread on the threads.

"I'm concerned about the temp the caulk can take during setup time?"
If that's not printed on the rube, 3M's toll-free number should be. Those folks are absolute aces, call any of their toll-free numbers wit any question about any product they make--and they'll connect you to someone who can answer it, often an engineer.
We were trying to track down their "silver" masking tape, which is designed to peel clean after extended exposure to sunlight (up to 30 days, as opposed to a week for blue/green premium tapes) and got bounced through 3M divisions all the way to AUSTRALIA which is where the division that makes it apparently happens to be. Found the local supplier, confirmed the huge difference in working time, bought the tape. Two days of masking, working the week, rain the next weekend...yes, it WAS on for more than a week, and came off clean.
