I was wondering if anyone how has actually made the trip from cape may or south eastern new jersey could elaborate on how they navigated the trip to Block Island. A couple of us were talking and I was curious on the various routes and timing.

The return trip would take through the east river in Manahattan and back to cape may.

Thanks

We did the trip from Cape May to Montauk last July. We stayed along the NJ coast and then the south shore of Long Island. We made the jump across the NY Harbor area at about 2:00 AM. There was very little shipping then.

The boat was very new to us and the winds were from the West, not sure I'd do the same if the winds were offshore.

At 6 foot draft (for us), the NJ coast has very few options if there are any waves at all. There are threads on Sailnet that relate this better. A quick search may turn some up.

Two quick points:

- On the northbound trip keep a good watch for commercial fishing boats off of Long Island.

- When going down the East River, a lot of people like to go thru Hell Gate at slack water (it is least squirrely at that time.) Watch out for the grey DEP ships that rarely slow down.

Enjoy your trip! :)
