So my sailing-cutie and I are getting hitched this fall and we're drawing up a wedding registry. Actually, in principle the idea of a registry offends me, but since we're odd ducks and live on a boat, we think it is important. Otherwise we'll end up with a bunch of 110v blenders (instead of winch powered), a living room set and breakable china....

We don't want to put hardcore boat stuff on the registry like a Haarken windward sheeting traveler because people won't know what it is and we want people to be able to imagine us having fun using their gifts. Most of the items we want to put on there should have an obvious use and be priced between $20-$300. eg. a marine BBQ.

So far we've got an inflatable kayak, a portable BBQ for shore side picnics, a picnic backpack set, a teak cutting board, some sailing books, and a good set of marine binoculars.

Any suggestions for fun stuff to put on our list?

Cruising guides (~20-60)
Coffee press (~20)
Anchor windlass (~2000)
Columbia long sleeve shirts for sun protection (~35)
GPS for our cabin dedicated anchor alarm ($320)
Slush fund cash contributions for ??? (~20+)

AIS receiver (<200)
Mustang hydrostatic PFD (~200 - 250 each - get her's in pink)
Good harnesses (<100 each)
good set of tethers (less than 100 each)
Weems and Plath Yacht lamp (about 100 or so)
Garmin chart plotter (350 - as high as you wnat to go)
boat clothing with boat name on it (25 - 250)
boat books (any thing by Spurr, Casey or Calder)
FUGAWI (<200)

We use myregistry.com I think. Will confirm with sailingcutie. It's pretty cool as it allows you to easily link to items from any website including west marine). They also have no fees except if people make cash gifts through the site.

Great suggestions so far. Thanks! I like the teather idea. I'm sure there are many family members who would love to shower us in safety equipment. After all sailing offshore in a small boat is madness! :laugher

I'd highly recommend that you not use WestMarine as your registry source, since prices are generally far better at APSLTD.com, sailnet.com, defender.com, mauriprosailing.com hamiltonmarine.com, sailboatowners.com, etc.

Anything that will be seen and used on a decently regular basis. This lets the others see it in action. OR anything that you wouldn't mind having but refuse to pay for like a dodger.

Matching foul and fair weather gear with your ship's name for the honeymoon cruise.
Gift cards as mentioned above are always good these days.
Galley gear. Plates with the ship's name etc...
Any Weems and Plath stuff as mentioned above. Too expensive to buy yourself

Congratulations! This may or may not help you, since our situation was a little different, but I'll post about our experience, just in case it provides an option to you or others:

My wife and I just got married just less than a year ago, and we already had most of the traditional "home" things for which people register traditionally. We weren't terribly comfortable with the idea all the gifts, but if people were going to buy us a gift, we thought it made sense it be something that we'd really enjoy or could use. We did not yet own a boat. So we decided instead to register for our sailing honeymoon, which was two weeks on a bareboat.

It was all online, and we posted "items" that guests could purchase, which were things they'd enjoy give us and we'd enjoy receiving, like dinner out in a specific honeymoon destination, or a bottle of wine for a picnic. Folks seemed to enjoy participating in our trip, and we really applied every dollar for what we posted, except where a destination changed because of weather. While ours was a bareboat charter, one could use this option for many other types of registries.

Again, might not help you exactly, but I thought I'd throw it out there, just in case, for your or others.
