Hello all again,

With the mast rebuild project I am working on, I am trying to determine what hardware is legacy and what hardware is necessary to transfer to my new mast/boom.

(Please bear in mind that I am new to Sloop sailing and have been a Catboat sailer for 20 years, though have sailed Catamarans and Trac 9s and the like)

One piece I am not sure of appears to be a boom slide. It is a metal track mounted to the underside of the boom at the foot. It goes from foot to about 12" in. In the rigging box that was passed on when I purchased the boat, there appears to be a line with what looks like it was ride in that track but without the mast setup it's hard to know what it is/how it is used.

Does anyone have any ideas what this hardware might be and if it is useful in my new build?

Also, is General the right forum to be posting this stuff in?

Thanks a million already for previous answers.

Greg, I'm a little confused about the location of the track. ( t-track? )

It's on the bottom of the boom (underside) and is it at the Mast/gooseneck end? or the Clew end ?

could be an outhaul setup of some kind.

Reefing.. Any pictures of the boom? other hardware on the boom?

Sorry for the confusion

It is at the clew end on the underside. T-Track is probably a better description.

I tried to add an image but I can't since I haven't posted enough times yet. So that's a bummer.

It seems like it is maybe a part of the vang setup. Outhaul and reefing are two good options as well. Who knows! Hopefully I can get some images up sometime soon.

A vang attachment would not be at the clew end of the boom.. and outhaul slides are usually on the top of the boom section, not the bottom.

Could be someone set up some sort of reefing block arrangement on this short track for the reef clew. Could also be a quick-connect way to attach the mainsheet if the boat routinely got 'de-rigged'.

Keep on posting - you'll soon have enough posts to post a pic link. Suggest you join Photobucket.com, upload your pics there and then paste the IMG code into your posts. By far the best way to put up photos here (free and spam free)

Are you using "clew" correctly? I only ask because the vang and outhaul would definitely be on opposite ends. The clew end would be the aft end. The tack end would be forward, up by the gooseneck.

From your description, it sounds like a boomkicker track, but that would be on the tack end, a couple feet back from the gooseneck.

I've also seen things that look like a fixed-stop traveler or jib car track stuck on the side of a boom, aft, so that a single cheek block could accommodate different reefs, but I'm not sure why there would be a track on the bottom of the aft end of the boom.

Edit: I just saw Faster's response, and he has some good ideas as to why it might be aft.
