We moved our “new to us boat” to a “new to us” location during the summer – currently hauled in Boston harbor.

‘Looking for local recommendations, particularly someone for some minor sail repair and also a good rigger to cast an expert eye over our standing rigging, now the snow is finally melting. Boston area or reasonable driving distance. I do like to support local businesses when I can, so if you have any recommendations for local stores or services that we may need in the future….

Thanks to anyone in the Boston area that can help – local knowledge is invaluable.

I used North East Rigging to replace the standing rigging last year - they were very responsive and the price was reasonable. I think they're located in Concord.
Thanks for that. I am hoping to find someone a little closer to check it out. Everything looks good to me but I can't talk to the PO and I don't know how old it is. I will feel more comfortable having another set of eyes look it over. If I don't find someone before, I will be heading that way later in the year and will give them a call.

My bigger issue is that the outhaul had pulled clew of the main up into the slot in the boom and it was jammed solid. I eventually cut a slit in the sail and unlayed the bolt rope to free it, so I need that repaired + there is some chafe from rubbing on the spreaders. There is definitely a new main in the not too distant future but I was hoping to another season or two out of the existing one.

The weather is finally warming up and I can get started on the "to do" list. Don't ya just love deferred maintenance?

I've got a long list of things to do - it runs to about two pages or so. At least I was able to repair some of the canvas over the winter - gave me something nautical to do.

NE riggers does a lot of work in the area, so they could probably come out for free - at least that's what they did for me.

NE Riggers will come to your marina.

Far as sails I've been using Doyle Sail in Salem. There a few sail lofts in Salem/Marblehead.

North East Rigging (NER) pretty much handles Boston and areas north, last year they replaced my standing rigging at Boston Harbor Shipyard. Seems they're in that yard once a week or so...

If the mast is not out of the boat, and you dont know when it was last down, you should prioritize having BBW pull it ASAP and then NER look it over. You'll be out of pocket $900 or so, but that's lot less than a full rig replacement.

I just looked up North East Rigging. When you said, "Concord", I was thinking New Hampshire rather than Massachusetts. They are closer than I realized.

Two more votes for North East Rigging - sounds like they are the goto people.

Getting the mast pulled right now will take some coordination. Being the new guy in Boston Harbor Shipyard, I got put in the far corner with two rows of big power boats in front of me. I was going to pull the mast at the end of the summer as that works better with some of the other projects I have planned but I'll talk to NER and see what they think. The rigging actually looks pretty good but your point is well taken, it's not something to take a chance on.

Thank you!
