I have a 25 C & C that I am keeping in the Chesapeake in Cambridge which is brackish water. I will have the boat in the water from early April until Mid December. I am looking for a recommendation for bottom paint. The boat is new to me last July I have no idea of what kind of paint the is on it now. I will be pulling and repainting yearly. Thanks in advance.

Theres an additive to common paints just become illegal/unavailable. U need to check.
You are referring to the anti slime additive, "Irgarol." It is not illegal, production of it has simply stopped. However, inventories of Irgarol-laced paints are still on the shelves.

Micron 66 is good.
Interlux Micron 66 requires saltwater to function. The OP stated he would be doing his boating in brackish water.

I use a paint not allowed in the USA. Causes cancer to barnacles :)
You use a paint not allowed in most countries. It's not something most people would brag about.

If you took micron 66 into brackish, would it stop working for good? or would a quick bottom rub start the protection again?

We all know things are made illegal for no good reason most times, and sometimes pure speculation. I am not sure what world harm anti-slime would do, but I can't see it being bad enough to stop using a working product. Remember they want to remove copper from paint too.

Yes.

No.

MarkofSeaLife wasn't referring to an anti-slime additive when he inferred that he uses a tributyl tin anti fouling paint. Tributyl tin paints have been banned by almost all seafaring nations.

So I could add Tributyltin acetate to my micron 66 and end up with the most awesome bottom paint, in the world?

Not likely. Adding tin to your copper anti fouling paint would almost certainly ruin the paint. It would absolutely violate the paint's warranty.
I never knew paint had a warranty. Is it for adhesion or growth?

saw a guy add 5% tbt to his micron 66...paint started to bubble off his bottom, ruined perfectly good 275 bucks a gallon paint for that so called extra benefit..cost him more to take it off then on, had to hire it out cuz he was too worried about being poisoned...

Essentially, the warranty is : "It is what it is."

Do check with other sailboat owners on the eastern Choptank, especially for barnacle adhesion or barnacles getting a 'foothold' in a SLIMED (soft growth) bottom vs. 'whatever' bottom paint they happen to be using.

On the far upper Ches. (with similar brackish conditions that produces bodacious slime ... and THEN, allows barnacles to fasten deep into the slime ... and then attach to just about 'any' bottom paint) - for the past several years Ive preferred Micron-Extra.
I keep my boat in an area of little moving water; those on moorings in 'faster' water, dont have such a severe 'barnacles-after-slime' problem. If there is a barnacle problem on the Choptank where you will be keeping your boat .... Irgarol based paint (Micron-extra, etc.) = little to no 'slime'; if no slime, then few barnacles.

I also use Petit (spray) "barnacle barrier" on the prop and and the metal underwater running gear.

hope this helps.

Has anyone heard of mixing cayenne pepper powder in bottom paint? Maybe my friend is pulling my leg, but he claimed to have done it and I noticed his bottom (the boat's, not his) lasted a long time in Florida waters. If it works, doesn't seen as environmentally horrifying...I think...sure is rough on the tongue.
And what does the military use? The Navy guys at the nearby base NEVER seem to have slime or barnacles on their boats that are wet stored. A Navy guy told me their paint seriously works, is seriously expensive, but isn't available to the regular public...naturally.

I have heard about and seen cayenne pepper on boats. Old drunks swear by it. However the issues with old drunks is memory. Fresh paint is always great! you could put gypsy tears in it and for a while it would work wonders. The issue is, it still fouls, depending on where you are. So no, don't waste your time with old drunk's tales. If cayenne pepper worked it would be in micron paint already.

Hey FST, is this "bottom shield with composite copper technology" from west marine any good?
I only recommend two anti fouling paints, and Bottom Shield ain't one of 'em. That said, it may be adequate for the fouling conditions in your neck of the woods.

I could add more copper if I need to?
I suppose you could, but I wouldn't advise it.
