Hello,

I just picked up a British Seagull outboard from an estate sale and am wondering if anyone can tell what model/year it is.

The serial number on the engine is JP8648 and has a 4 blade prop. I think it is a model 40 but I am not sure.

Thanks in advance.

John,

Most welcome. They're great little engines. I have one in my basement, too.

Years ago when I taught sailing in Sausalito all of our 20 or so boats were outfitted with British Seagull outboards. They are quite reliable IF you follow the exact procedure for starting them. If you mess up one of the 5 steps, though, you're unlikely to get the damn things started anytime soon :)

Thanks for the Link!

Looks like I have a 1957 Model 40 Plus

Funny, our serial number is very different from yours (SJP33376L), but it appears we have very similar engines!

If I read the info correctly, ours is a 1956/57 Model 40 Plus Longshaft.
