I recently bought a 1975 Cal 20. It came with a 2003 Tohatsu 4hp, that has stopped working. A friend has offered to let me use a 2012 Mercury 6hp. My question is, can my small boat handle the size and speed of a 6hp? I'm not sure where to find this information. Any help would be appreciated.

As long as your engine mount is in good condition it should be able to handle 2 more hp with no problem. I have seen larger outboard than 6hp on Cal 20s.

Thank you for your help. The Mercury is a 6ph 4 stroke. At this point, I won't be using the well.

I only said 2 stroke because it is lighter , the 4 stroke shouldn't be a problem either . Even better really because they get better gas mileage and are quieter than the 2 stroke , not to mention the exhaust smoke .
By the way congratulations on your Cal 20 . I have some racing hours on them .
