Hi folks - looking to buy a first boat that will be easy on a single hander, friendly to the wife, fun to sail, and robust. I seem to have narrowed the list down to a ''77 cal 2-29 (w/ volvo MD6A) and a ''75 catalina 30 (w/perkins 3cyl). Want to use the boat for coastal cruising. My experience is modest; I''d appreciate any seasoned opinions that would help shorten the list to one (or none!).

Regards - Nick

I personally like the Cal 2-29 better. The Cal 29-2 were a little better built and are more fun to sail. Speed wise they are pretty equal but the Cals have an esier time sailing to their PHRF ratings. The Cat''s have a little more room down below but I am less of a fan of their layout.

Catalina should be able to supply you with replacement parts for an older boat. Also, there are many companies offering upgrades. ie Garhauer travellers, vangs, etc.
I''m not sure about Cal parts.
Good luck!
