I have run into a dead end on repowering my CAL 34. I don't have a major problem with keeping the A4 since it runs well, but am concerned about not being able to get parts for the transmission/Paragon v-drive when it breaks or wears out.
Beta Marine advises me repowering is a major problem due to the Paragon V-drive angle of 24 degrees and the replacement v-drive (ZF 15MIV) angle of 15 degrees. (The Paragon cannot adapt to the Beta Marine engine.) The differences in angles would require serious modification to the engine bed that could include ripping it out and building a new one. I am advised total mods would run somewhere between 5 and 10 K labor, with the additional expense of the new engine and v-drice, shaft, prop, control cables, etc..
Obviously, I am not going to sink that kind of money into a 42 year old boat, even though it is in great condition. Any suggestions for a more economical repower, or leads on transmission/v-drive parts?
