1.Are there any internet service providers that access the internet throughout the Caribbean from land based phone lines? Alternatively,are there many internet cafes throughout the islands?
2.Is there a cell phone option that you can use throughout the islands - at a reasonable cost?

There are indeed ISPs in some of the islands. But in a multi-national environment, I wouldn''t assume that subscribing with one would ease your access needs when elsewhere in the Caribbean.

Internet Cafes are everywhere, or at least multiple places at each town/city in each island we''ve been in. Islanders quickly found out that an inexpensive computer and phone line = regular income from yachties, tourists & others. Pretty simple equation, actually. <g> But connection speed and capabilities beyond the basics (e.g. printing) may be limited.

No one seems to suffer much with comm problems in the E. Caribbean (or in the D.R., Turks & Caicos or U.S. territories for that matter).

Oops, forgot to reply to the cell phone question... I''ve yet to hear of a satisfied customer who got ready cell service up/down the islands. Their infrastructure (at least on some of the islands) just isn''t there, yet. OTOH phone cards are the comm currency of choice and phones are everywhere. You''d probably spend far less relying on phone cards, anyway.

Dear Holodon:
No problem finding internet
terminals, but as far as cellular
service, regardless of whether its
sattlelite (iridium or GLobestar) or landbased (batelco or Wireless and Cable)_
you are going to find yourself with
much higher per minute costs than
in the states, like $1.50 plus per
minute. The cheapest thing you can
do is get phone cards, like Walmart
cards for use in PR and USVI, otherwise
and elsewhere you just have to be prepared
to pay high rates.
