Looked at a boat today. Is on the hard. Its a 1979 Catalina 25' with a full keel. My question is upon inspection it appears to have a hair line crack half way thur the keel running parallel with the hull. Its goes 1/4 way thru it. Sorry I have no pictures at this time. Is this something I should be concerned about.. Does the type of material its made out of damage easy. BTW the crack is not where the keel attaches to the hull.

Thanks

Matt

That is called the Catalina smile.

It's not a big deal unless the plywood that is embedded in the joint gets wet. If that is wet then it is a big deal.

There is a ton of information available on the Catalina smile, just search for it and you'll find out how it happens, how to properly inspect it, and what fixes would be necessary.
