Hello group. I did a cool project today. I bought a honda 75 '80 for my new kicker. she's been garaged since '80. BRAND NEW BASICALL!;) However she was a short shaft but I just had to have her. So I found a longshaft 75 with a blown power head and swapped the lower ends..heck of an all day job for a guy like me. It's done and it was quite rewarding. Now here's my question. When I put the lower end on I noticed a lot of calcium buildup on the tube on the old used lower end that runs the water up through to cycle water to cool the motor. I was gonna dig it out but forgot..I had parts everywhere and it was basically an all day nightmare for me and my friend. So now I ran her and of course she doesn't have a steady stream of water peeing out..just a bit more than drips. I know that means to put a new impellar in. However I was thinking of filling my full-size garbage can up half way with water, adding a bottle of clr and running her to see if it got the lime and calcium out of it and cleared it up to a steady stream. Has anyone ever tried this? Do you think it would hurt? or Could hurt the motor? I was planning on doing this and running her for 15 minutes. Then dumping out this water and refilling the can and flushing her out with just fresh water. What does the group think? BTW. How much is it approx. to take my motor in and have the impellar done?

Partial answer: if you can remove and replace the lower unit, I'll bet you can replace the impeller too. I haven't worked on Hondas, but just did that job on my 2 cycle Merc. The tough part was reinstalling the lower unit, which it sounds like you've already figured out. I followed instructions in my Clymer manual and was able to sort it all out.

just wondering if you think clr would hurt my motor? it says it's okay to run through a coffee pot....but on the other hand it says not to use on painted metallic surfaces?? I was gonna scuff her up and paint her anyways...I'm not interested in changing my own impellar at this point. Swapping the lower unit was quite a challenge and a rewarding day for me. How much is it to have a shop do it? If I remember right I paid around $80 last time including the impellar. I have a good impellar of my old lower unit (or whatever it's called). Most coffee pots are either glass or stainless. Aluminum, which is what most outboards are primarily made of, is a much more reactive metal.

Can't answer exactly, but Nigel Calder's book suggests overnight soaking of marine head pumps, etc. in vinegar to help clear out calcium buildup...a quick call to your Honda dealer might answer your Clr question...

Was the impeller part of the assembly you switched out to put the long shaft on your outboard? I ask because the lower unit of my 1980s vintage Merc had no sign of clogging of the water tubes, and I suspect a water pump/impeller problem if that also was switched out.

Another thought, is that it was pretty tough for me to get the drive shaft, shift shaft and water tubes all lined up when reinstalling the lower unit-it could be that the lower unit water tube isn't making a good connection with the power head water tube. The only way to figure that out would be, sigh, to dissassemble it and check it out...

this is from the CLR website...

Do not use CLR on wood, clothing, wallpaper, carpeting, marble, terrazzo, natural stone, colored grout, painted or metallic glazed surfaces, plastic laminates, Formica or aluminum.

I would say no
