OB, I didn't know Capta and MaineSail had left. I see Capta posted here two days ago, and "reacted" to a post yesterday. Maine Sail has posted today.

The "likes" are still there, and still visible. I can see that "admin1" has Liked your latest post. If you're not seeing this, then there may be an issue they need to deal with.

If you don't care about the "reactions" (whatever that is), then it's pretty easy to ignore it. In fact, I had to go digging to see it. It's not like it has any impact on the discussions.

I appreciate that change is always hard. It's not clear to me that this is an improvement over the previous tool, but I'm not seeing many negatives so far. But to each his own. If you choose to leave us, SN will be poorer for it.

Still think reaction score is ridiculous as is the absence of thank you for this helpful post. Will look in periodically but believe I’m moving on.
I really hope you don't abandon ship, but it's your call. I'd only suggest that a few of your push back conclusions are not accurate (others are accurate), so maybe you should give it a little time to see how it shakes out. Those who "like" appear at the bottom of the post. I'm guessing everyone is just trying to get used to the new system and hasn't been posting, liking, etc, as they are trying to re-find the features.

Ironically, I never understood the old Thank You feature. Unless one went back to read their own post, which I almost never did, I don't think there was a way to know you were thanked. Therefore, not sure how those we thanked ever knew. Likes were flagged, which is why I exclusively used them.

I really like that those on my ignore list do not appear whatsoever. I can see the thread count skip a couple of numbers, but the old system would show who it was and disclose their post was hidden. Much better now. I'll be curious to see if their quoted post will appear in other's posts.

Pros and Cons.

On the main page is it possible to remove/disable the 20px X 20px icons to the left of each title? They are tiny, quite a few of them are just a colored capital letter, and they don't provide any useful information. Visually they interrupt my ability to scan the message headers.

The rest of the upgrade looks very nice -- thank you for putting in all this hard work.

I liked a post to check out how it worked. Didn’t see anything. Will continue to follow. Don’t understand how to edit after something is posted. Don’t see preview as being helpful either.
usually post between other ongoing tasks so often make mistakes. Being able to edit after something was posted was helpful

I just "liked" your post. Do you see it?

I had the same question about editing. Rick answered me (Community Feedback: We Are Live!).

So it is there, just not identified as anything. It's the little three vertical dots in the top right of your post. Click on that and you see a short menu with "Edit" as one option.

How To Edit A Post

Click on the 3 vertical dots to the far right of the timestamp. Select “Edit”.

Members have unlimited editing of new posts for the first 24 hours after posting. Up to 10 existing posts (older than 24 hours) may be edited per week. More editing will be allowed as each of those 10 edits expires every 7 days.

Are you referring to member avatars? Those are part of the platform.

Those with just a letter simply need to upload an actual avatar.

How To Change/Update Avatar

Click on your avatar near the upper right-hand corner of the site and select “account settings” from the drop-down menu.

That will bring you to the account details page.

Once you click on your avatar, then click to choose your file.

Make sure to click “okay” afterward.

We are excited to announce that we are live on our new forum platform!

It’s been a long time coming. Let’s face it. Sometimes older forum technology lags behind other parts of the internet. Although seeing the same format for a long time is comforting, the member experience shouldn’t include dealing with outdated, unsafe, slow software.

The transition to a new platform will never be 100% smooth but the days of dealing with out of date forum software are over. We have teams dedicated to building a world-class community for you. The development has been steady with regular software releases since May 2019. Asking members for feedback and coming up with ideas for improvement is what we want.

Speed and Reliability Are Key
No one should have to wait for information. This site has been built to be much faster and more reliable, period.

New Homepage Experience
Your home page now features the most active forums, trending discussions, featured showcases, and top contributing members. This will keep you up to date on what’s happening in your community and, as we go through updates, will become a very personalized experience for our members.

Search
We have introduced new search algorithms, powered by an industry-leading AI platform, to help you find information faster. We plan to roll out new features to continue improving search, and to power many additional areas of the forum.

Due to the volume of content, our search platform may take some time to complete indexing over the first few days after migrating. During this process, you may see a limited number of posts until indexing has been completed. We appreciate your patience.

Finding Your Way Around
We have made the design clean and simple to use. Near the upper right-hand corner of the community, you will see navigation icons.

The first icon is for what’s new on the site.

Clicking on it, by default, will take you to new unread posts. On that page, you can click on additional tabs as well, such as Popular, if you prefer to view active topics.

Clicking the list icon next to “NEW” will bring you to the full forum listing.

Clicking your avatar will give you a drop-down menu for all things related to your account.

You can also navigate more by clicking the 3 vertical dots.

Dark Mode
We have introduced Dark Mode. One of our favorite features allows you to access the site with a power-saving, and easier on the eyes dark mode. You can access it in the drop-down menu under the 3 vertical dots.

Save Bookmarks
Now you can save your favorite discussion threads and posts! Bookmarks are a handy way to remember and easily find great content or stuff you want to read later.

We also wanted to make it easier for new users to understand the lingo of forums. We have cleaned up various language to more commonly recognized phrases including:
  • Following - Thread subscriptions, and Watched are now known as Following
  • Conversations - Private Messages or PMs are now conversations and can be accessed from the user avatar drop-down in the main navigation
  • Showcase - Showcase is designed for users to "showcase" items/projects through the use of uploaded images, text descriptions and custom content categories. It’s a way to visually and textually provide detailed information on the content you wish to share. The showcase would be similar to a catalog, whereas the gallery would be like a photo album. It can be accessed from the drop-down menu with the 3 dots.
Take a tour and look around! Check out the Help section for some quick FAQs about the new platform.

Please keep all feedback, questions, concerns, requests for help, etc.regarding the new platform right here in this Feedback thread. This will help us make sure not to miss a request for help and also let us pass along your thoughts to our Product team. The Admins and I will be here to help along the way taking note of your comments.

This must be the worst upgrade sailnet has ever done. It is an extremely sloppy design. Please fire the web designers and hire someone that knows what they are doing.

It looks like PNG, JPG, JPEG, JPE, and GIG

Huh. You might want to consider loosening up a bit on that. I realize there are a whole lot of dangerous file formats out there but this is a forum where information get shared and to not even allow pdfs as attachments seems a bit draconian.

Is there a way to flag Followed threads, when you query New. I understand, I can select a Filter than does so, but it now takes three additional clicks to see "subscribed" threads. If I set that as a default, it would take three extra clicks to see all new threads. The old system displayed a check mark next to New Posts one was already subscribed to. Something like that. For a brand new system, I am finding my way around, but it seems to take more interaction to get what one wants, which is counter intuitive for an upgrade.

Previously, if you quoted a poster, in order to reply, you would have all the other posts underneath the text box. This was helpful, if half way through your post, you wanted to check to see if a point had already been made, or see the exact language you may have used prior. I no longer see them.

What were the problems this update fixed?
I don't see any improvement... only a new skin / interface and something to learn.
I don't like the puny icon in my browser favorite bar.
So far I am underwhelmed.

So far I am just looking more for the additive features such as likes , following threads etc. I assume that I’ll get used to it eventually.

Outbound your contributions are usually interesting and helpful. I can certainly understand your frustrations causing you to curtail your participation. Understand most appreciate your being here.

I’ve seen changes on SN over the years in members with the loss of some very good people. Some like Cam were driven away by the admins of the site being pressured by a Tartan legally . Some like Auspicious left due to the lack of civility allowed by mods in the past , which seems to be corrected. Others have cut back their postings. The sailing community suffered from their withdrawal.

I too have thought about curtailing posting on SN because of a specific mod arbitrarily overreacting to posts and not applying the same restrictions on their own posts that they require on others. Meeting out punishments to those the mod disagrees with. This tends to cycle out eventually . I stay involved because of the friendships I have made ( in person) from here. That camaraderie is important in playing it forward in our sailing community. As long as that continues I stay involved.

The format changes Are hard to tell if they are improvements. Time will tell. I applaud the attempt to inprove. .

Look for the tiny eye. (It may take a bit to catch up on the new platform.)

How To Know If You Posted In A Thread

Step One:
Check your preference settings by clicking on your account settings under your avatar near the upper right-hand side of the community.

That will bring you to a new page with some left-side navigation. Select preferences.
3496

Step 2: Make sure you have a checkmark in "Automatically watch content you interact with" and then click save.
3497

Step 3: Now when you check popular or new posts you will see an "eye" under the title area.
3498

It will also show on the thread list within a forum section.
3499

When you are in the middle of reply to a post, the other posts are still there, you have to scroll up to view them.

This isn't working for me. I have done what you describe, but none of the posts I have participated in shows up with that eye. ALL the posts show up with an eye on the posting list, which seems to indicate the number of people who have viewed that post.
