allright guys...I need some help:)

I was looking at a small yanmar inboard and it was nice except for the fact that both the tranny bottom and pan of the engine(removable) were completely corroded out...

looked like electric corrosion but it could simply be from sitting in water and the engine not being grounded...oil was clean...the engine was all painted and protected except for the bottom.

I beleive I can look for a used replacement pan for the engine(2qm15) but the tranny is going to be hard since its connected or a complete part of the flywheel and aft engine mounts...

has anybody had luck soldering(looks to be magnesium alloy) or brazing or even jb welding parts like this

I really wanted this engine for my boat and its all I got down here...that or an outboard on a too big sailboat

Define corroded out. How could you check if the oil was clean if there are holes in the pan/case? The engine pan should be available from Yanmar or used somewhere, the tranny case might be available, I wouldn't bother trying to weld/patch it.

There was a similar thread last year (?) from someone stuck in paradise with limited resources and a hole in the engine pan.

You are looking at a sheet of stamped metal that needs to be repaired. Two hundred years ago you waited for a tinker to come around, and he fixed similar holes in your pots and pans. The solutions haven't changed. You can solder, weld, braze, glue...your choice. They'll all work, although personally I'd prefer soldering or brazing and I'd expect to find brazing materials that would make a good bond easier than finding the right solder.

If sheet metal is too expensive, try the cake & roasting pans at Walmart or a thrift shop. Might even find one that bolts right up. (VBG)

A thrift shop will sell a stainless roasting pan for a dollar, when a metal supplier would charge $25 for the same amount of plain sheet. Go figure.

crumbly...all of the lower half inch or so...

the engine pan can simply be chipped away and reinstalled...
the tranyy I would pretty much have to get a new flywheel cover and tran case as they are one unit which Im thinking is going to be waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more hard to find...

a used tranny is not in my cards right now:(

Ive seen bronze brass combos being brazed onto engine cases on motorcycles and stuff...but I was under the impression that yanmar cases are some sort of aluminum magnesium combo which is much harder to weld braze

cause there are drain holes and the top pour cap, it smelled and looked nice...

I too thought the same get a used engine pan and then look for the tranny case as it all one unit...I would have to swap the internals but thats not that hard to do

I know Hawaii can be a transportation problem, but if you can get molding compound (alginate, silicone rubber, even plaster of paris) you can remove the cover, make a casting of the exterior, and then lay up a couple of layers of fiberglass to make a replacement. Any boatyard that does frp repairs should be able to do this for you and perhaps even reasonably.

Your new cover would be frp instead of metal but as long as they used an epoxy resin, I can't see that would be a problem.

hmmm, what happened was tha pan crumbled while the engine was being taken out of the donor boat

so I uderstand why the confusion

this is what I was thinking...make a mold

but what if the pan has an oil pick up tube or hole or something...

need to get a manual for the 2qm15...thats first

I know how to rebuild engines

problem is it can get expensive down here if too many parts need rebuilding or custom stuff...

an outboard is always a fatster "cheaper" temporary solution..till I get to panama, or miami or something were an inboard can be grafted
