I might be looking at replacing the old Volvo MD2B engine in my boat, and am wondering if anyone can give me ballpark estimates of the cost of repowering.

How much for the motor itself?
How much for installation?
And if I do it myself, what can I reasonably expect to have to do myself, other than drop-in the motor.

Thanks very much

Based on my last check, a Beta Marine 25hp would be in the $15,000 to $18,000 range installed. You could easily have 10k in just the engine.

Some problems you might encounter would be the need for a new engine panel w/possible rewiring and motor mount placement.

Shop around there are deals to be had if your willing to look at different motors. For example last summer I got a price on a new 27 hp vetus engine with the wire harness for $5800. That was out of Baltimore.

I think PB's estimate of $15K-18K is prety close based on the yard doing everything. You can reduce that substantailly by removing doing some or all of the labor yourself. Depends on what you are willing and capable of doing. The engine alone is going to be close to $10K as noted.

The prices being bandied about here are very high, I will not go onto the installation side as that can vary tremendously from boat to boat and area to area.

What I can tell you though is that going rate for a basic 20HP engine package complete with standard transmission, elbow, mounts and panel sells for about $7,000 to $7,500 ex works and a 25HP will be $400 to $500 more.

The above is based on Beta Marine engines and I am connected with that company.

When asked for a ballpark figure, I always quote high. And at $80 an hour and up for yard work of that nature, it can add up quickly. Especially as complications are more the norm, than the exception in older boats.

These prices are indeed similar to prices I've now received elsewhere.

However, I've just scored a rebuilt Penta identical to my existing engine for $1750 and I'm going to go with that. If I get a couple of seasons out if it, I'll be happy. Then it will be time to go with a new Beta.

Thanks, everyone.

A friend recently had a new Yanmar put in his Irwin 39. Total installed cost was $20K. Labor was almost equal to the cost the engine alone. So I still stand by my original estimate of $15K to 18K installed.
