For information and budgeting how much is the average survey on 40 to 50 ft boat? I am trying to do as much work on budgeting as I can to make a more informed decision before the actual short listing. Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks

In our area these days surveyors are charging $12-15/foot. So a decent survey will run $500-750 (and up) for a boats that size range, plus, of course, the cost of haulout and pressure wash (about the same again possibly)

Depending on the boat and specifically depending on the engine, it is usually wise to hire a marine diesel mechanic as well as a surveyor and have a reputable sail loft inspect the sails if you don't feel confident in your ability to do this.

Kelowna BC 10 bucks a foot and about 300 dollars for a Mechanic to check out the engine. (cheap) Vancouver 15 dollars a foot plus a base 75 bucks along with about the same for the Mech. I have been checking out prices myself lately.

Find the best surveyor you can by recommendation of others who have used him. Do not take brokers recommendation - either the one you're using or any other broker. This is not something to save money on. The best surveyor will probably save you more $ when it comes to final price.

To save yourself some grief, make sure they are recreational surveyors, if that is what you need. I unfortunately ended up with a commercial guy and god what headaches. Never looked at the rigging or sails, etc...low balled the value because "of where the boat is". In South Louisiana I wouldn't use A.B. Brown out of Morgan City again. It is more so his assistant be he signed off.
